Professional Basketball is coming to Southend with the news that a new franchise, Essex Pirates, will play all their home fixtures at Southend Tennis & Leisure Centre.
Southend Pirates will play in the British Basketball League against some of the biggest names in British Basketball.
On hearing the news Sports Champion for the borough Cllr Tony Cox commented:
"I am delighted that the Essex Pirates will play their home fixtures at Southend Tennis & Leisure Centre.
"Basketball is one of the biggest team sports in the world and delighted that another professional sport will be based in Southend.
"I am impressed with their committment to develop Basketball in schools and take basketball out to the community. This can only be a good thing int erms of encouraging people to participate in sport".
