24/10/09 - Readers letter

Sir

Following the Government's decision to make crime figures publicly available I am somewhat disaapointed that West Shoebury, the ward that I represent, has seen a dramatic increase in overall crime by 22% for the months of April, May and June compared to the same period in 2008.

When you look at the different crime areas West Shoebury residents have had to put up with a staggering 73% increase in burglaries, a 100% increase in robberies, a 3% increase in violent crimes and a 7% increase in anti-social behaviour.

It is intresting to note that overall crime has fallen in Southend which I believe is down to excellent intervention initatives in certain areas.

Whilst I welcome this, areas like West Shoebury can not be left to allow criminals to become rampant.

I believe that the police in Shoebury do an excellent job and largely still retain public support but this will soon erode should the next set figures still show dramatic rises in crime.

Yours Sincerely

Cllr Tony Cox, West Shoebury Ward, West Road, Shoeburyness
