West Shoebury councillor, Tony Cox, has called the use of biometric data in Southend Schools as morally wrong.
Up to six schools in the borough are thought to be using the technology including Chase High, Westcliffe High for Girls and St Bernards Catholic School.
In a hard hitting speach Cllr Cox hit out at the use of biometric data claiming that it seems absurd that in America you can buy a gun with live ammunition but in some schools in this town you have to have your fingerprint taken just to get a book on nursery rhymes out of the library.
Cllr Cox also claimed that the money spent on such devices, some cost in excess of £20,000, could be better spent on a teacher salary or new equipment for the school.
