A former cinema in Ness Road, Shoeburyness has been given protection to stop it being demolished.
The old Palace Cinema has been given local listing status by Southend Council to protect the front of the building.
This means that the facia will have to be kept and incorporated into any future planning applications for the site.
The news of it's protection was met with cheers from local residents who wanted to protect the building.
Cllr Tony Cox councillor for West Shoebury said:
"I'm delighted the facia of the old cinema has been awarded local listing status.
"With many buildings around the Garrison site preserved, it would have been a shame to see part of Shoebury history lost. It's important we do not loose nearly 100 years of history.
"Many people are critical when history is lost for good but this building will be retained for future generations.''
The new cabinet for Southend Council has been announced and see's the new face of West Shoebury ward councillor Tony Cox added to the team.
